Climate change threatens the foundations of good health and the situation is worsening, with nine out of the ten hottest years on record occurring in the last decade.

The NHS has recognised this urgency, and in the Health and Social Care Act 2022, committed legally to achieving Net Zero by 2040 (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) and 2045 (Scope 3 emissions). However, achieving this remains a daunting task, and low energy solutions in every segment are going to be vital.

Of particular importance is the need to eliminate single use devices from healthcare, and this was confirmed as a policy by the DHSC in 2024 with the publication of the Design for Life roadmap. This commits the UK to the removal of all avoidable single-use medtech by 2045. But to achieve this, new methods of reprocessing and decontamination will be needed.
